"Submarines on Parade"

July - October 2000

Back to Submarines on Parade main page.

In an effort to promote the arts and tourism and to raise funds for local charities, the Milford Fine Arts Council has launched Submarines on Parade, an exhibit of artistically designed fiberglass submarines. Each 5 1/2' by 2 1/2' sub will be sponsored by local businesses and will be creatively designed by regional artists. Milford residents and visitors will be able to cast their ballots fo a People's Choice Award winner from the fleet. After a brief but exciting summer season, the subs will be auctioned off in October with all proceeds going to various non-profit agencies throughout the city.

The first submarine design, drafted by William Borne in 1578, never got off the drawing board, but fiberglass "keels" for Submarines on Parade were laid at Nor'easter Yachts under the expert supervision of Hank France and Earl Young.

Co-chairs Joan Keegan and Jackie Munk, on the bridge for this project, have been scouting sites for the fleet. One obvious choice; the Milford Green, somewhere in line with Simon Lake's house. Imagine Simon, a prolific submarine builder and the inspiration for this project, rocking on the porch on a warm spring evening, basking in the glow of a creation inspired by his designs.

The Kickoff Reception for this project was held on May 18, 2000 at the Center for the Arts. The fleet itself will weigh anchor and steam into Milford the first week of July.

Facts and Figures

The submarines are made of fiberglass. Each will weigh approximately 50 lbs. The dimensions are 5 1/2' by 2 1/2' high by 2' wide. Subs will fit easily into a small pickup truck. They may be painted, cut or added on to.

Sponsors may request a theme but artists will have total artistic license to interpret.

Artists will have their submarine to work on starting the week of May 22, 2000. Installations are scheduled June 26 - June 30.

The Gala Opening will be July 15, 2000 at Milford's beautiful Harbor Landing.

The commemorative booklet for Submarines on Parade will include photographs of all the entries.

All sponsorship money goes to underwriting the initial costs of submarines, the artists' stipends, and the People's Choice Award. The balance will be donated to the Milford Fine Arts Council to establish a Trust Fund. All proceeds from the auction in October will go to the sponsors' designated local charities.
