#9 "Beyond the Fringe"

The Art
The sponsor, Connecticut Decorating Network, asked that I make a dwelling that would draw attention to the decorator's world - a "funky" interior and an exterior that resembled a South Beach look, or a Nantucket Beach cottage look. CDN supplied me with some materials for furniture, and I supplemented it with fabric and paper. Most of the furniture I made, mixing plaids, stripes, and patterns resulting in an outlandish style, my idea of the decor requirements of a submarine-type dwelling. I was also able to hang prints of some of my paintings throughout. Once I had finished the interior I determined that there was no way I could make the exterior look either South Beach or Nantucket. I purchased a case of bathroom caulking and let my creativity take over, adding the door and window treatments as they came to me. The added touch of fringe was to enhance the name selected by CDN, Beyond the Fringe
- Catherine Hamill
The Artist
After a successful career in marketing administration, Catherine became seriously interested in photography, particularly landscapes and seascapes, winning many ribbons in various local and statewide events. In 1993 she was introduced to painting in oil, and thus began a new venture and a new career. Catherine's paintings are exhibited throughout the US and she is represented in galleries in CT, Block Island, and No. Carolina. Her area of expertise remains landscapes and seascapes, but Catherine also paints still lifes and house portraits. Commissioned work has included backdrops for model trains, fantasia painting, battle-ships, war planes, and light-houses.
