Guardian Mermaid - Frieda Howling Davis
The Art - According to Webster's Dictionary a mermaid is "an imaginary sea creature with the head and upper body of a beautiful woman and the tail of a fish." My childhood vision of a mermaid as one who lives in the sea and is protective of life in the sea inspired me to create a mermaid who embraces and protects the submarine. At the same time I wanted to define the submarine's mission by having one fish spit out a missile and another relieve itself of a warplane. - Frieda Howling Davis
The Artist - A painter and printmaker who divides her time and her exhibits between the Milford area and Florida, Frieda feels that nature is the primary focus of her work. Her inspiration comes sometimes from the awesome forces of nature, other times from nature's tranquility. Frieda sees the environment as forms occupying space and translates nature's forms into various moods which will affect the inner and spiritual emotions of the viewer.
